Local MP, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP is encouraging community groups, parish councils, and voluntary organisations across Skipton and Ripon to apply for a share of a new £1.35 million fund aimed at improving local community buildings.
The Community Building Programme, launched by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF), is now open for applications until 4 August 2025. York and North Yorkshire Mayor, David Skaith, has committed £600,000 from his Mayoral Investment Fund to help more than 20 community hubs, ranging from village halls to cricket grounds.
In January, Julian visited the Cononley Village Institute to learn more about the project that has improved the building’s energy efficiency and sustainability. The Retrofit Project, which began in mid-2023 and finished a year later, has transformed the 116-year-old community building into a more energy-efficient and comfortable space. The project received a UK government grant of £36,654 from the UKSPF and with additional funding raised locally, enabled the installation of solar panels, enhanced insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and modernised glazing.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our rural communities to secure funding for vital improvements to village halls, sports pavilions, and other community hubs,” said Julian. “These buildings are the heart of our local life — places where people gather, support one another, and access essential services. I strongly urge all eligible groups to consider applying.”
The fund focuses on two key themes: Accessible Communities and Healthy Spaces. Grants can support projects such as installing accessible facilities, improving energy efficiency, or creating outdoor spaces that promote mental and physical wellbeing.
