Yesterday, 16 December, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP met with representatives from the Environment Agency and North Yorkshire Council to address odour complaints linked to the Arla creamery in Settle.

The meeting included Dean Richardson, Head of Regulatory Services (North Yorkshire Council), Peter Crass, Divisional Officer for Environmental Health (North Yorkshire Council), and senior figures from the Environment Agency, including Area Director Mike Dugher and Team Leader Graham Miller.

This meeting followed dialogue between Julian, residents of Settle and Giggleswick, local organisations, parish councillors, and North Yorkshire Councillor David Staveley.

During yesterday’s discussions, the Environment Agency outlined progress toward resolving the issue. Key updates included:

  • Discussions with senior management are taking place  to speed up progress.
  • The last inspection of the site was on 11 December, with odour checks carried out on December 9th and 10th.
  • Regulatory powers will be used if there is no improvement in the near future.

Following the meeting, Julian commented: “I appreciate the updates provided by the Environment Agency and North Yorkshire Council today, and I will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the local community are kept updated on progress by the Environment Agency.”
