Pupils from Birstwith Church of England Primary School and Markington Church of England Primary and Nursery School visited the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 17 June 2026.

During the visit, the pupils were given a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster by Parliament's Education Team, learning about the history of Parliament and the role it plays in shaping the country's laws and policies.

The visit also included a curriculum-linked workshop in Parliament's Education Centre, providing pupils with the opportunity to explore how democracy works and the importance of civic participation.

Following the workshop, local MP Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE met with the pupils for a 20-minute question and answer session. During the discussion, pupils asked a range of insightful questions about his work for local residents, advice for someone wanting to become an MP, rural and housing issues as well as the Government's recently announced social media ban.

Speaking after the visit, Julian said, "It was fantastic to welcome pupils from Birstwith Primary School and Markington Primary school to Parliament. The students were engaged, inquisitive and asked some excellent questions.

"Visits such as these give young people a valuable opportunity to see our democracy in action, learn more about how Parliament works and understand how decisions are made. I hope the experience has inspired them to take an active interest in public life and their communities."

Teachers and staff accompanied the pupils throughout the day, helping them make the most of the educational opportunities available through Parliament's award-winning education programme.
