
Skipton and Ripon MP, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, visited The Clarendon in Hebden on 3 April to celebrate its recognition as a finalist in the prestigious Countryside Alliance Awards 2025, also known as the "Rural Oscars." During his visit, Julian met with Lionel Strub, the owner and chef, and Councillor Richard Foster to discuss the significance of this achievement and the challenges facing rural pubs.
The Clarendon has been named a finalist in the Pub category of the Countryside Alliance Awards alongside Drake & Macefield Butchers in the Butcher category and Town End Farm Shop in the Village Shop/Post Office category.
During the visit, Julian, Lionel and Councillor Foster discussed the impact of the recent rise in national insurance contributions for employers and broader challenges faced by pubs.
Julian emphasised the need for continued support for these vital community hubs to ensure their sustainability and growth.
