Skipton and Ripon MP, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, has called for increased access face-to-face banking services in rural communities, specifically highlighting the challenges faced by residents in Settle.
During Treasury questions on 8 April, Julian urged the Chancellor to support the relaxation of criteria for banking hubs to better serve rural areas.
Julian said, "Rural communities, such as Settle in North Yorkshire, are really struggling from this loss of face-to-face banking services. LINK hubs are one route for them to replace banks that are closing. Could I urge ministers to do what they can, I accept it is an independent organisation with LINK, to help them relax the criteria for rural communities, allowing them more face-to-face banking services."
LINK is a not-for-profit organisation that operates the UK's largest cash machine network. It works to ensure that consumers have access to cash and banking services, especially in areas where traditional bank branches have closed
The Minister acknowledged the importance of the issue and expressed willingness to discuss specific banking hubs that may need attention. The Minister also emphasised the government's commitment to working with LINK and the financial service sector to ensure that rural communities receive the necessary support.
