Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has expressed concern following the publication of the latest claimant count figures, which show an increase in the number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits in Skipton and Ripon over the past year.

The Office for National Statistics data for May 2026 shows that 995 people in Skipton and Ripon were claiming unemployment-related benefits, equivalent to 1.8 per cent of the working-age population. Although this remains significantly below the UK claimant rate of 3.9 per cent, the figures indicate that claimant numbers have continued to rise locally.

Compared with April 2026, the overall claimant count increased by five people. Compared with May 2025, the number of claimants is up by 35 people.

The figures also highlight challenges facing younger people seeking work. There were 150 claimants aged between 18 and 24 in May 2026. While that represents a monthly decrease of five people, the number of young claimants remains 10 higher than a year ago.

Commenting on the figures, Julian said, "The latest figures from the ONS are concerning, showing the claimant count in Skipton and Ripon has risen over the past month and the past year.

"This Labour Government's jobs tax through higher National Insurance contributions for employers, high energy prices and increased employment costs are making it more expensive for businesses to hire and grow.

"The Government should be backing local businesses to help them create jobs, not increasing the costs they face. I will continue working to support local businesses and help more people into employment across Skipton and Ripon."

The claimant count includes those receiving Jobseeker's Allowance and Universal Credit claimants who are required to seek work.
