Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP visited Upper Wharfedale School in Threshfield last week, meeting students and staff and joining celebrations to mark the school's recent School of Sanctuary recognition.
During the visit, Julian toured the school, met members of the teaching staff and gave a short speech at a whole-school assembly celebrating the achievement alongside other members of the school community.
The School of Sanctuary award recognises schools that go above and beyond to create a welcoming, inclusive environment for everyone, including refugees, asylum seekers and families who have come to the UK seeking safety and a fresh start.
Speaking after the visit, Julian said, "It was fantastic to visit Upper Wharfedale School and see first-hand the positive and welcoming environment that has been created for its students.
"I enjoyed meeting staff and students, hearing about their experiences, and learning more about the school's journey to achieving School of Sanctuary status.
"This award is a significant achievement and a testament to the sense of community that runs throughout the school. Everyone involved should be immensely proud."
The visit came at a difficult time for the school community following the recent loss of a senior member of staff, Mrs Mukherjee, who had played an important role in the school's journey towards becoming a School of Sanctuary.
Julian added, "My thoughts are with everyone at Upper Wharfedale School following the sad loss of Mrs Mukherjee. It was clear from speaking to staff just how much she meant to the school community, and how important her contribution was to achieving this recognition."
