Superfast North Yorkshire have now launched the subsidised satellite scheme in North Yorkshire. To ensure that ‘no one is left behind’ by the national superfast broadband roll-out, BDUK, the broadband delivery arm of the Department of Culture Media and Sports created a scheme to subsidise satellite broadband connectivity. The scheme enables businesses and residents who receive a broadband connection of 2Mbps or less, to apply for subsidised installation of the equipment necessary for satellite broadband.
The subsidy available is between £350 and £460 and is solely for the installation of equipment. As a condition of the service, end-users must contract with one of a number of the providers on the scheme, for a minimum of twelve months.
North Yorkshire County Council and Superfast North Yorkshire are keen to ensure that citizens and businesses in North Yorkshire are able to benefit from the subsidised satellite scheme. To this end NYCC will be directly funding the satellite scheme in the county. Superfast North Yorkshire will administer the scheme. Participation in the scheme does not preclude anybody from any future investment in next generation broadband by Superfast North Yorkshire.
From 15th February 2016, residents and businesses are able to apply for subsidy under the scheme through the SFNY website at superfastnorthyorkshire.com.
The MP said: “Having campaigned tirelessly for Superfast Broadband in North Yorkshire and recently urged the Government to extend the satellite broadband scheme, I am delighted this is now available for my constituents in North Yorkshire. With an extremely rural constituency, I am acutely aware of the problematic low speeds experienced by too many communities. This scheme will make a real difference to those who live or work in the most remote of communities that are yet to or cannot receive terrestrial broadband.”
