Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has welcomed the government’s announcement of a £53 million support package for vulnerable households relying on heating oil, following the sharp rise in prices linked to global energy disruption.
Heating oil costs have increased significantly in recent weeks after the conflict involving Iran affected global oil supplies and shipping routes, pushing up prices for fuels used by many rural households.
Commenting, Julian said, “Many households across North Yorkshire rely on heating oil, and the recent price increases have caused real concern in rural communities.
“I welcome the government’s announcement of targeted support for vulnerable households who rely on oil for heating. It is important that this funding is delivered quickly and reaches the rural households that need it most.”
Julian has also joined other MPs in raising concerns about reports of sudden price increases and cancelled deliveries in the heating oil market, and has called for the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate pricing practices to ensure consumers are treated fairly.
