Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP, Member of Parliament for Skipton and Ripon, visited two thriving local businesses at The Courtyard Dairy near Austwick on Thursday 27 November 2025.
Julian began his visit at The Courtyard Dairy, where he met proprietor Andy Swinscoe and his wife Kathy. The Courtyard Dairy is renowned nationally and internationally for its commitment to championing traditional, handmade cheeses from small family farms.
The business has won numerous accolades, including World Cheesemonger of the Year and recognition as one of the UK’s best cheese shops. The business also recently reached the Final of the BBC Food and Farming Awards.
During the visit, Julian toured the shop, museum, and maturation rooms, learning about the business’s ethos and its role in supporting British cheesemaking.
Following this, Julian visited Rind, a hospitality venture led by Mathew Carver, located on the same site. Rind is part of a growing group of restaurants dedicated to showcasing the best British cheeses.
Mathew shared the story of his business and discussed the challenges facing the hospitality sector and the importance of support for jobs and growth.
Commenting, Julian said, “It was fantastic to meet Andy, Kathy, Mathew and their teams to see first-hand the passion and innovation driving these businesses. They are not only creating exceptional food but also supporting local farmers and jobs. Their success is a great example of the entrepreneurial spirit in our region.”
