Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith MP visited Glasshouses Community Primary School on Friday 24 April, meeting pupils to talk about his work as the local Member of Parliament and to congratulate the school on its successful road safety campaign.
During the visit, Julian spoke with pupils about what it is like to represent Skipton and Ripon in Parliament, answering questions on democracy, the role of an MP and Julian’s campaign encouraging parents and schools to consider delaying smartphone use among younger children, which the school has indicated it is keen to support.
Julian also praised the work by the pupils who ran a successful campaign to reduce the speed limit outside the school to 20mph. Julian last visited the school in April 2024, during which road safety was raised as a concern.
Commenting, Julian said, “It was great to visit Glasshouses Community Primary School again and to meet such thoughtful and engaged pupils. Their work on road safety is a fantastic example of how young people can make a genuine difference in their community. The reduction in the speed limit outside the school is something they should be very proud of. I look forward to visiting again soon.”
