Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, Member of Parliament for Skipton and Ripon, visited The Devonshire in Grassington on Thursday 30 October to meet with directors Matthew and Kirsty Wilson and hear first-hand about the challenges facing the hospitality sector.
The visit followed correspondence from the business ahead of the Autumn Budget, highlighting the increasing pressures on pubs and restaurants, even in busy tourist areas like the Yorkshire Dales. During the visit, Julian Matthew and Kirsty discussed issues including utility prices, business rates, and National Insurance contributions. Julian reaffirmed his commitment to championing these concerns in Westminster.
The Devonshire, a well-known local pub and hotel, is not only a key employer in the area but also a familiar sight to fans of All Creatures Great and Small, as its frontage features as the fictional Drovers Arms.
Speaking after the visit, Julian said, “It was a great to meet Matt and Kirsty at The Devonshire and hear directly about the pressures facing their businesses and hospitality more broadly. Their knowledge of the industry and commitment to the local community is clear, and I will continue to raise their concerns with Ministers ahead of the Budget.”
