Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP is encouraging residents across Wharfedale to take part in a survey being run by the North Yorkshire Public Safety Service to better understand the impact of visitor numbers on local communities.
The survey coincides with concerns being raised over the recent long weekend about pressures on popular locations including Burnsall and Grassington. Reports have highlighted issues such as inconsiderate parking blocking roads and access routes, as well as littering and the use of disposable barbecues in sensitive areas.
The North Yorkshire Public Safety Service - comprising North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and local health services - is gathering feedback to help inform how these challenges are managed in the future.
Julian said, “Communities across Wharfedale benefit from our strong tourism economy, which brings many people to enjoy this beautiful part of the country.
"However, over the recent long weekend I have been concerned to hear reports from areas such as Burnsall and Grassington about inconsiderate parking preventing access for buses and emergency vehicles, as well as litter and barbecues being left behind.
"It is important that local people have the opportunity to share their experiences. I would encourage anyone living along the Wharfe and in surrounding communities to take a few minutes to complete this survey so that the relevant authorities can fully understand the impact and respond appropriately.”
