Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, MP for Skipton and Ripon, is urging residents and businesses across Skipton and Ripon to do their part in conserving water, as Yorkshire officially enters drought status following the driest spring in over 130 years.
The Environment Agency confirmed that Yorkshire moved from “Prolonged Dry Weather” to official “Drought” status on 9 June 2025, following four consecutive months of below-average rainfall. May saw just 66% of the long-term average rainfall, and while early June brought some showers, they have not been enough to reverse the impacts.
Commenting, Julian said, “The prolonged dry weather is putting significant pressure on our rivers, reservoirs, and wildlife. I am urging everyone to do what they can to save water including turning off taps, fixing leaks, or using water butts - which can make a big difference. We all have a role to play in protecting our environment and ensuring a sustainable water supply."
The Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water are implementing their drought plans, which may include precautionary measures such as hosepipe bans. The public is encouraged to follow water-saving advice from Yorkshire Water, available at www.yorkshirewater.com.
Residents are also reminded to report any environmental incidents, such as fish in distress or signs of blue-green algae, to the Environment Agency’s 24-hour incident line on 0800 80 70 60.
