Skipton MP, Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE, has expressed his disappointment following the announcement that Halifax will close its Skipton branch, located at 63–65 High Street, on 26 January 2026.
“This decision will come as a blow to many residents in Skipton, particularly older and vulnerable customers who rely on face-to-face banking,” Julian said. “While I understand the increasing shift towards digital banking, it is vital that those who still need in-person support are not left behind.”
Halifax has stated that the closure is due to declining in-branch usage, with most customers opting for mobile, online, or telephone banking. For those who do not use online banking, Halifax has stated that customers will be made aware of the services available via telephone banking and at Skipton Post Office, 11 Swadford Street, Skipton, BD23 1RD, where customers can withdraw and deposit cash over the counter for free and check their balance.
The nearest Halifax branch following the closure will be in Keighley. The next nearest cash machine is at NatWest over the road.
Further, Halifax has confirmed to Sir Julian that all customers who regularly use the branch will receive a letter explaining these options to them.
