Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has met with Foluke Ajayi, Chief Executive of Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, for an update on the development of the new Airedale Hospital.
During the meeting, Ms Ajayi outlined the progress made since the Government’s latest RAAC report, confirmed in the Minister of State’s December letter, which stated that Airedale Hospital can continue operating safely beyond 2030, though a small proportion of RAAC planks remain inaccessible and will continue to pose some residual risk. She reiterated that the Government has committed significant investment for RAAC mitigation alongside £49 million in capital funding for Airedale’s immediate infrastructure needs.
Julian also received an update on the Trust’s planning application lodged in December for a new multi‑storey car park and access road, submitted as part of the preparatory work for the rebuild. Ms Ajayi explained that recent engagement with staff, patients, residents and the Community Panel has shaped priorities for a modern, patient‑centred facility with improved navigation, more natural light, better communal space, and stronger transport links. She confirmed that the Trust is continuing its wider ambition to move more care into neighbourhood services as part of its long‑term model.
The meeting further covered the National Audit Office’s recent report on the New Hospital Programme, which maintains that Airedale’s new hospital is expected to open in 2033, with construction planned to begin in 2027–28, and a projected increase in overnight bed capacity to 430. The NAO has rated the programme amber due to the complexities of replacing RAAC‑built hospitals and broader market pressures, though it remains deliverable with strong programme management.
