Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has expressed concern following the latest claimant count figures published by the Office for National Statistics, showing that in April 2026, 1,000 people in Skipton and Ripon were claiming unemployment-related benefits, equivalent to 1.8% of the working-age population, compared to 3.9% across the UK.
While the overall number of claimants remained unchanged on the month, the figures show a rise of 45 people over the past year, pointing to growing pressures on local jobs and businesses.
Among younger people, there were 155 claimants aged 18 to 24, with numbers falling by 15 compared to last month, but rising by 20 compared to a year ago.
Commenting, Julian said, “Although our area continues to perform better than the national average, these figures clearly show the wrong direction of travel. The rise of 45 claimants over the past year is concerning and reflects the growing pressures facing our local economy.
“Businesses across Skipton and Ripon are telling me that rising costs are making it harder to invest and create jobs. Increases in Employers National Insurance contributions, higher energy bills, and more burdensome employment regulations are all taking their toll.
"I will continue to press for policies that support business, bring down costs and help create good-quality jobs across our area.”
