Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has expressed concern following the latest claimant count figures showing an increase in the number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits in the Skipton and Ripon constituency.
The new data shows that in March 2026, 1,020 people in the constituency were claiming unemployment-related benefits - equivalent to 1.8% of the working-age population. While this remains below the UK average of 4.0%, the number of claimants has risen by 40 over the past month and 30 over the past year. Youth claimants have also increased, with 170 people aged 18 to 24 now claiming support, up 15 over the month and 15 over the year.
Commenting on the figures, Julian said, “While our area continues to perform better than the national average, any rise in the number of people out of work is a cause for concern. Behind these figures are individuals and families facing real challenges.
“Local employers are telling me that higher National Insurance, Business Rates costs and increased regulation are making it harder to create jobs and invest in growth. It is especially worrying to see an increase in the number of young people claiming unemployment support.
“I will continue to work with local businesses, schools and colleges to ensure opportunities remain available to those seeking work.”
