Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP paid a visit to St John's in Sharow where he was shown the church’s Bell Tower and its eight historic nineteenth century bells.
Julian learned about the history of the bells, and the more recent project to restore them and bring them back into regular use. The bellringing team, including Captain Wood, Ringing Master David and Tower Correspondent Bridget, also gave Julian a quickfire tutorial as well as the opportunity to ring some of the bells himself.
Commenting on this, Julian said: “It was a privilege to be shown the Bell Tower and to try my hand at bellringing. I am grateful to Wood, David, Bridget and the team for ensuring this great tradition continues and that, as with the church’s other activity, it is welcoming to all.”
The bells are regularly rung ahead of Sunday morning services, with practice sessions on Mondays. You can find out more about the work of the Bellringers on the church’s website here.
