Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP met with Kate Nicholls OBE, Chair of UKHospitality, in Westminster this week to discuss the challenges facing hospitality businesses across the UK.
During the meeting, they discussed a number of issues currently affecting pubs, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality venues, including rising business rates, ongoing energy costs, and proposals for a levy on overnight stays - also known as a 'tourist tax'.
Julian heard concerns that increases in business rates are placing additional strain on hospitality venues compared with other sectors, while energy costs remain significantly higher than historic levels for many small businesses.
The discussion also covered the potential introduction of an overnight visitor levy, which industry leaders have warned could place additional pressure on domestic tourism.
Speaking after the meeting, Julian said: “Hospitality businesses are a key part of our communities and local economies. From family-run pubs to hotels and restaurants, they provide jobs, attract visitors and support high streets across North Yorkshire.
“It was great to meet with Kate to hear directly from the sector about the challenges they are facing, including rising business rates, energy costs and the potential impact of a tourist tax.
“I will continue to raise industry concerns with Ministers to ensure that the sector gets the support it needs to thrive.”
