Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP has called for an urgent parliamentary debate on the Government’s planned ban on lead ammunition, warning it could have significant consequences for UK manufacturing and sovereign capability.
Speaking in the House of Commons on Thursday, 12 March, Julian raised concerns from British manufacturers and distributors about the decision by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to phase out lead ammunition by 2029.
Responding on behalf of the Government, the Leader of the House indicated that Ministers would be made aware of the concerns raised and offered to facilitate a meeting to discuss the issue further.

Commenting after the exchange, Julian said, “Manufacturers and distributors in the UK are raising serious concerns about the practical and strategic consequences of this decision. It is vital that Parliament has the opportunity to examine the impact on British industry, jobs and our wider sovereign capability.
“I welcome the offer of engagement from Ministers, but there must also be a wider discussion in Parliament so MPs can fully consider the implications of this policy before it is implemented.
