Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP raised concerns in the House of Commons on Monday, 23 June, about the effectiveness of Jobcentre referrals and job seeker accountability, following reports from a local business in his constituency.
Speaking during Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) questions, Julian highlighted the experience of R&J Yorkshire's Finest Farmers & Butchers in Kirkby Malzeard, who have received multiple job applications from individuals who appeared to have no intention of attending interviews or accepting employment.
Julian urged the Government to review how incentives and penalties are aligned within the job-seeking system to ensure that applicants are genuinely committed to finding work.
In response, the Minister for Employment, Alison McGovern MP, offered to connect Julian with the local job centre manager to facilitate better collaboration between businesses and employment services.
Julian is committed to championing local employers and ensuring that government services work effectively for both businesses and jobseekers.
