Supporting Rural Communities

I have been keen to help people cope with the challenges of living and working in such a rural area. I am supporting farmers by campaigning within Government on issues from milk prices to livestock movement, agricultural crime to farm payments.

Last year, I hosted a discussion event at Skipton Auction Mart with the Farming Minister, George Eustice MP. Local residents were able to voice their concerns or hopes for the future of agriculture in the UK. I have recently met with groups at Bolton Abbey and Skipton, and I will continue to be a strong voice for local farmers as the Government works to ensure that leaving the EU will benefit this vital industry.

I have also led the political campaign to get more investment in broadband - this originally saw more than £70m come to North Yorkshire for the roll-out of high speed, reliable internet connections. A further £20.5m of public funding was allocated last year for North Yorkshire as part of phase 3 for the superfast broadband roll-out. And most recently I supported North Yorkshire’s bid for the Full Fibre Wave 2 Challenge Fund– leading to an additional £15m from DCMS to improve broadband in our area.

This process is ongoing but already tens of thousands of premises have better broadband.
